Hyperliquid's native API vs 0xArchive for historical market data

Published 5 min read

0xArchive comparison · Native venue APIs

Hyperliquid's own API is free, and it is where you trade: it places orders, reads your account, and shows the market as it is right now. Its history is short. Candles stop at the most recent 5,000 per interval, the order book endpoint has no past, and older data sits in raw S3 files you download and parse yourself. 0xArchive records the market and serves its past by time range: order books since April 2023, funding and open interest, liquidations, and the order-level book with wallets.

Use both: the native API to trade, an archive to research. Facts about Hyperliquid's API come from its own documentation, checked on 24 October 2026.

Use Hyperliquid's API to trade and to read the market now

The exchange endpoint signs and sends orders, cancels and transfers. The info endpoint returns the current book, mids, your positions, your open orders and your recent fills. Its WebSocket streams the book, trades and your own events live.

No data vendor replaces that. An archive can tell you what the book looked like, but only the venue takes your order.

Hyperliquid's API keeps 5,000 candles and no past book

The book endpoint answers for this moment only, so a backtest that needs the book at 14:32 last March has nothing to ask. Candle requests return the most recent 5,000 per interval, which is three and a half days of one-minute bars.

Your own fills stop at the 10,000 most recent. Every request also draws on a shared budget of 1,200 weight a minute per IP, so backfilling years of anything through the info endpoint is slow by design.

Hyperliquid's S3 archive is raw files you parse yourself

Hyperliquid publishes historical data in requester-pays S3 buckets. L2 book snapshots and daily asset contexts land in one bucket about once a month, and the docs warn: “There is no guarantee of timely updates and data may be missing.” Fills and node data sit in another, in formats that changed over time.

That is enough to build your own archive. It is not an archive: you download LZ4 files by date, hour and coin, decompress them, reconcile the formats, and fill the gaps.

0xArchive serves the past by time range, ready to query

Ask for a market, a data type and a UTC window, and the rows come back in order with a cursor for the next page. Hyperliquid core, Spot, HIP-3 builder perps and HIP-4 outcome markets each have their own routes, and Hyperliquid trades before 22 March 2025 are kept but partial.

From 10 March 2026, 0xArchive also keeps every resting order with its order ID and wallet (L4). Replay a checkpoint and its changes, and you have the exact book at any moment since then.

Lighter's own API keeps more history than Hyperliquid's

Lighter publishes every trade back to its mainnet launch on 17 January 2025 as Parquet files, through a paid export or a requester-pays S3 bucket, plus hourly open interest for every market. Candles come 500 per call.

0xArchive adds Lighter's order book history: price levels from 29 January 2026 and every resting order (L3) from 5 March 2026, with funding and open interest from August 2025, in the same API as Hyperliquid.
